The new state budget that went into effect on July 1 includes $1.3 million to help fund a project to restore Spring Creek and improve water quality in the Eau Gallie River and Indian River Lagoon. 

The Spring Creek Water Quality Project will include replacement of an 88-foot section of corrugated metal stormwater pipe, installation of a second-generation baffle box, and dredging of approximately 9,500 cubic yards of silt and sedimentation currently within Spring Creek. 

Replacement of the pipe will reduce erosion that is entering the upland stormwater system and impeding drainage flow. 

The installation of a second-generation baffle box and dredging of sedimentation in the creek is expected to remove approximately 1,205 pounds of total Nitrogen and 252 pounds of total Phosphorous annually. Baffle boxes are underground structures made up of chambers that trap debris, trash, and other pollutants from stormwater that flows from streets and into storm drains after rain events. The city is actively installing baffle boxes in older neighborhoods throughout Melbourne as part of its comprehensive plan to reduce the amount of storm water pollution entering the Indian River Lagoon.

Total project cost is estimated to be $2,545,000. The City of Melbourne Stormwater Utility and Brevard County’s Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) program will provide the remaining funds needed for the project. Construction is expected to begin in 2023.
